“Prakhar! just listen once! Just listen to that Katy perry song! Just once! It’s amazing!”
Whenever my sister reiterates these kind of irritating statements, I just listen to them from my left ear and hilariously throw them out of my right ear. She continues to say that. Not only my sister, there are many people in my environment who believes in these American pop songs and listen them more than our Indian ones. Yes, it’s okay ; I am not criticizing any music at all. It’s only that I know nothing about western classical music so how could I like it! I don’t understand their beats, their tunes, it all goes above my head.
It’s their music, their culture, why WE are so much dedicated in that when we have an affluent culture in music! I am unable to tap my foot on “Tick-Tock”. My foot retains jollification and my head starts nodding when I play the heart-throbbing “Sheila ki jawani” or that paddling “Prem ki naiyyaa”. Why it happens, we all know. It’s all because we have something which they don’t have and that is what we call MELODY. Melody is a joy, melody is an addiction, sometimes pain, sometimes satisfaction.
We have a big bunch of great music directors right from Naushad to A.R. Rahmaan or from S.D. Burman to Pritam. The rich culture not only ends here, there is also another bunch of composers waiting for the right time to settle themselves in Bollywood. This chain will never end and it will continue to entertain Indians.
If You think that there is a lack of variety in our music, then I must tell you all that we have guys like Amit Trivedi who has the ability to create good melodies and also the songs having the effect of western music at the same time, at such a young age. We have music jodis like Vishal-Shekhar who know the best to make a fusion of a rock and a classical song. We have a trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy that represents unity in diversity as all three of them comes from separate religion and still moving smoothly in the industry and giving some immortal songs. We have a music icon A.R. Rahmaan who has proved that the rock genre can also be melodious by delivering an awesome soundtrack in Rockstar. We have some intelligent and hardworking composers like Pritam whose compositions have both quality and quantity by delivering 10 to 12 movies per year and still each song has something new and sweet with 100% melody!
People often say “world is totally changed now!” or “zamaana badal gaya hai”. If you started thinking that now Indian music doesn’t refresh you, kindly leave our country. We don’t need a person whose i pod is always filled with Katy Perry, Justin Bieber or even Hanna Montana. Americans are better in making movies or TV shows but when it comes to music, they can never be better than us. You know why? Because we have one person for composing a song, the other person writes the lyrics, next person sings it and some other person acts in the video. Our Indian composers are fully dedicated to their work i.e to compose songs. They often dodged to come in front of cameras. They are too simple to face it. American musicians like Justin Bieber who has made glamour his daily routine, has made a large difference between the attitude of Indian and Western musicians. I am not saying that Western music is not good ; I just want all Indians to realize the importance of Indian music, the importance of melody in their life.
If you are still not convinced with my thoughts, just take a piece of advice: Today, before going to bed, take your earphone and set any song composed by Naushad in your i pod or mobile phone, then you’ll automatically understand MELODY ITNI CHOCOLATY KYUN HOTI HAI! πŸ™‚

  1. Bang on!!
The American music is more on the Drumming, the beats, Guitaring. Melody Part is missing & to my lil ears, almost all songs sound same. Tune structure wise. Indian or rather Asian songs have melody, & I love that! Even my lil ears πŸ™‚

  2. ya!! i love other asian songs like koreans!! i love their melodies!!!!

The above blog is correct but the only thing which is wrong is hard working music director like Pritam saala ek no. Ka chor.. 12 me se 10 k gaane to chori k hte h…

Both are good at there own places…but when it comes to music I will also prefer Indian music….reason being your native language has direct effect of words in your mind. You can relate them more to the situation and dat is why melody is more chocolaty.

Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj…..these are some of the short-term/music-company-created artist selling huge number of irritating albums. But frankly speaking I dont think these guys represent the good music from west or even from US. The music buffs in West/US actually do not like these dhin-chak-dhin-chak club beat music guys even one bit. There is lots and lots of great music from the west, explore it and you will like as a music lover. There are no boundaries of language, country, age, for good music. You will be surprised to know how many of the classic hits even from the 60’s & 70’s were ‘inspired’ by The Beatles and other rock-stars from the west of that era.. πŸ™‚

    • ya true! I am not against any kind of music. this article is for those who being an indian, criticize our music and appreciates western music. 1st we should respect our music n culture. then we can move to the whole world!
